Short legged fowl have been recorded since 1678 and birds of this type have been known in Scotland for more than 200 years. They are known alternatively as crawlers or creepers and have a distinctive wadding gait.
The length of their legs is determined by a genetic factor and their shanks should not exceed 3.5 cms in length.
This may make the bird look deceptively small but, in fact, it is medium sized and an adult make weighs about 3kg. The plumage of the Scots Dumpy may be several colours but is commonly either black or cuckoo.
By the 1960’s the breed was virtually extinct in Britain ad was only saved by importing from a flock from Kenya. |
